Grow Your Own Green Onions
If you plant onions or garlic cloves in a small amount of soil in a sunny spot they will send up green shoots that you can use like chives or scallions jabbour notes.
Grow your own green onions. Before planting improve the soil with a bucket of garden compost or well rotted manure for every square metre yard and add 35g per sq m 1oz per sq yd of general purpose fertiliser such as growmore. The onions will continue to grow in the ground. Fill the pot around halfway full with potting soil. When the shoots are or four or five inches long you can plant them in the ground or a pot filled with good quality.
You can also grow green onions in containers indoors if you have a green onion shoot that s around four inches long. The best container for growing green onions is around six inches deep and offers proper drainage holes. Make sure the soil is moist and pack it down into the pot. Choose a spot in your yard that has full sun and well draining soil.
Snip off what you need cutting the leaves all the way to the ground. Plant onion sets immature onions 5 10cm 2 4in apart in rows 25 30cm 10 12in apart from mid march to mid april. You can grow these from sets which are mini bulbs of onions that you ll be able to find at your local garden centers. After all green onions are simply the green shoots that come up before an onion bulb starts to form.
