Glass Water Break Test
The test is most frequently applied on freshly cleaned metals including steel aluminum brass and other metals that in a totally clean state are hydrophilic.
Glass water break test. Dry the outside of the glass. If the glass is beer clean then the water will fall out of the glass in a continuous sheet but if there are spots drips and dots of water left behind in the inside of the glass then it shows that the non rinseable films are present and starting to build up. Take a glass from the shelf and fill it with cold water. Use a spray bottle filled with distilled water to wet the surface two or three times at a distance of 6 inches 15 cm.
A glass can look visually clean to the eye but may be contaminated with grease dirt or chemical residues which can possibly distort the taste and appearance of drink especially beers and wines. A water break test is performed as follows. The water break test is one of the simplest most accurate methods used to establish whether a glass is really clean or not. Detection characterization and analysis of contaminants 2012.
The last thing you want on a surface that is to be plated painted or otherwise coated with something that needs to adhere to that surface is a film of residue that prevents that adhesion. The water break test is a fairly crude test which is suitable for detecting. The water break test is a simple quick and usually non destructive test to test for hydrophobic films. The water break test is easy and practical to conduct and helps you evaluate residues left from adhesives or conformal coating dots.
If it just rolls off you should be good. Carefully dry the outside of the glass to remove any surface water do not touch the inside of the glass and try not to knock the glass. If the post blasted equipment sits for more than 6 hrs before a pre treatment wash primer is applied you must perform the test again. Water break is mostly used on metals to expose the presence of contaminants or after surface processes such as etching anodizing painting priming coating grit blasting or sanding.
Water break test should occur no later than 4 hrs after post blast cleaning. Place the cleaned material or surface under test in a vertical position. Uses of the water break test. However these tests can be messy and sometimes can result in unintended contaminating due to impure water.
Drain the glass over a sink. A simple and effective way of testing your glasses for cleanliness is easy to do. If the water beads up then your test has failed and you must clean the surface again. With the glass held upside down check to see if the remaining water breaks into beads or droplets.
The water break test uses running water allowing it to form a sheet across the surface 32 33 breaks in the water indicate the presence of hydrophobic residues.
